General Information about cookies
What are Cookies?
HTTP Cookies (also called web cookie, Internet cookie or browser cookie) are text files containing small amounts of data generated by a website. These files are stored on a user's device (computer, mobile phone) by your web browser while you are browsing a website. When you visit a website, your computer, web-browser or mobile device downloads these files (cookies).
As described by Wikipedia, cookies were designed to be a reliable mechanism for websites to remember stateful information . Because webpages are "stateless"(they have no memory), they cannot easily pass information between each other. Therefore, cookies enable to provide this kind of memory for web pages.
Cookies are a specific technology that store information between website visits. They are also used for security purposes, such as when a user logs in to their internet banking app or their webmail. Cookies are used in numerous ways, such as:
- Remembering what is in a shopping basket when shopping for goods online.
- Supporting users to log in to a website.
- Analysing traffic to a website (record user browsing activity, pages visited, .etc...)
- Tracking users' browsing behaviour (clicks on particular areas of the website, visited pages...)
Therefore, the main purpose of HTTP cookies is to remember information about you're your online behaviour. When you return to this website (after closing it) – or visit a website that uses the same cookie – the website recognizes this cookie and therefore remember your information, like your browsing device, user credentials or preferences.
Types of Cookies
Cookies are used for different purposes, including functionality, performance, advertising, analytics, session, etc… However for clarification and understanding, we make the distinction between the following types of cookies.
Session vs Persistent cookies
| Session cookies | Example:
· Remember your items in your shopping cart.
Stored on the browser's memory
Do not contain an expiration date
Expire at the end of a browser session (when the browser is closed) |
| Persistent cookies
Also called permanent cookies, stored cookies | Example:
· Store your login information
· Remember your language preferences.
Stored on user's device (hard disk)
Contain an expiration date (date might vary). |
First-Party vs Third-Party cookies
In the context of cookies, "first" and "third" party refer to the website or domain placing the cookie on the browser's memory or user's device.
| First-Party cookies | Set directly by the website the user is visiting |
| Third-Party cookies | Set by a domain other than the one the use is visiting. When the browser (or other software) fetches these elements from other sites, these sites can set cookies as well.
Example:
· Incorporate elements from other sites (images, social media plugins, advertising…) |
